Fun With Stars.
Star-shaped cookies have always been my favorite thing to bake with kids. There’s just something about them that feels extra special—simple, fun, and full of little moments that turn into big memories.
Every time we pull out the star cookie cutters, the mood shifts. The kitchen gets louder, the counters get messier, and suddenly everyone wants to help. Stars don’t have to be perfect, and that makes them perfect for little hands.
I found the best star shaped cookie cutters. They are kid-friendly and absolutely amazing! No sharp metal edges, dishwasher safe, various sizes, and bright fun colors.
You can find my go to rolled sugar cookie recipe at the bottom of the post!
Why I Chose Stars
I love star-shaped cookies because they’re easy for kids to recognize and simple for them to use. There’s no pressure to make them “look right.” A star is a star—even when the points are a little wonky.
Kids get excited watching the shape appear when they lift the cutter, and that moment never gets old. It’s one of those small joys that keeps them engaged from start to finish.
How We Keep It Stress-Free

I’ve learned that baking with kids works best when things stay simple:
- A basic sugar cookie dough (homemade or store-bought)
- One or two star cutters in different sizes
- Sprinkles, icing, or colored sugar in small bowls
- Plenty of patience—and a sense of humor
I usually chill the dough ahead of time so it’s easier for little hands to roll and cut without frustration.
Letting Them Create
I let the kids take the lead as much as possible. They roll the dough, press the cutters, and decorate however they want. Some cookies get covered in sprinkles, some get “just a little,” and some turn into full-on masterpieces.
The cookies don’t need to be perfect. The goal is letting them feel proud of what they made.
The Best Part Isn’t the Cookies

Sure, the cookies are delicious—but that’s not why star cookies are my favorite. It’s the way baking slows everything down. Phones get set aside. We talk, laugh, and sneak a few sprinkles along the way.
By the end, the kitchen is a mess, the cookies are cooling on the counter, and everyone feels a little happier.
Star-shaped cookies remind me that home isn’t about perfection—it’s about being together. And that’s why I love choosing to bake stars.
